Twelve Bowls, One Firing

Kilcarn fires once a month. Everything in that kiln lives or dies together, which is why no two glazes ever quite match.

The kiln takes fourteen hours to reach temperature and three days to cool. In between, nobody opens it, and nobody is allowed to guess.

Ceramics is the only craft in this shop where the maker genuinely does not know what they have made until it is finished. Everything else can be corrected on the way.

Twelve pieces from the October firing, sorted by how far the glaze ran.

What comes out is sorted into three piles: sold, seconds, and one small pile nobody names that goes back into the yard wall.

The seconds are the interesting ones. They are the pieces where the glaze did something the studio has not learned to repeat yet.
