Bluebell

From Sam, Priya and Nadia

The mud kitchen has taken over. We built it in October expecting it to be a winter thing and it has become the centre of the room's social life, which is not what we planned and is much better than what we planned.

What is actually happening out there is negotiation. Who gets the big pan. Whether the soup is finished. Whether the birds will like it. Three-year-olds working out how to share a limited resource in the cold, for an hour, without an adult adjudicating — this is worth more than almost anything we could have set up indoors.

A row of small planted pots on a wooden step outdoors
Soup for the birds, left at the fence line and checked on repeatedly

Indoors we have been mixing colour. Several children have discovered independently that green and pink make brown and have expressed clear disappointment about it. We have not intervened.

Thick poster paint mixed on a tray in green and pink
The disappointing brown, made about forty times

Things we could use

  • Conkers, acorns, and any interesting sticks — we have run out
  • Old shirts for painting, adult size, we do not mind the state of them
  • Empty tins and jars, washed, for the mud kitchen
